Children in Need: We’ve Got Their Backs
Sponsor a Child with a Backpack Full of Back-to-School Clothing and Supplies
There’s a lot of pressure on that first day of school – a lot of new things. Unfortunately, some families don’t have the means to provide their children with new clothes or supplies to start out the school year. But fortunately, we have the means in our community to help these children through that first day and well into the challenging year ahead. Support the 19th annual Back to School Clothing Drive to provide new clothes for children living in New Milford, Kent, Washington, Roxbury, Sherman, Bridgewater, and Warren. Through this program, sponsors can lend a child a helping hand by donating all or part of one of these backpacks. Last year we sponsored more than 250 kids, kindergarten through high school, and we’re looking to top that number this time around. By becoming a sponsor you join others from your local community churches, clubs, and corporations who are already helping our community’s children. Here’s How It Works There are generally three levels of sponsorship: The United Way works directly with agencies and social service administrators from area towns to match backpacks (and sizes) to children determined to be in need. Clothing drop off will be at the United Way before August 1st, and at Webster Bank, 19 Main Street (First Floor, door on right hand side) after that date. The program runs until August 13th, but donations can be accepted any time. For more information on how to become a sponsor for the first time, contact Kathy Thomas at the United Way Southern Litchfield County office at 860-354-8800 or email us at kthomas@uwwesternct.org. For those familiar with the program, contributions may be sent to United Way of Western CT, Back to School Clothes for Kids, PO Box 29, New Milford, CT 06776. Remember that first day of school when you were a kid? The first-day jitters, new teachers, new classes, new friends – and the ever-present smell from all of the new clothes.
