Sponsors Sought for Clothing Drive

NEW MILFORD TIMES -- Jul 11 2008 -- Sponsors are needed for the 17th annual Back to School Clothing Drive.

By Emily Olson

This program is sponsored by the United Way of Western Connecticut, and provides new school clothes for children living in New Milford, Kent, Washington, Roxbury, Sherman, Bridgewater and Warren. United Way officials are anticipating that more families will be in need of help this year due to the current economy. Last year the community sponsored over 200 children. United Way is focused on education and helping children succeed in school. This program helps kids start the new school year feeling good about themselves and equipped with the essential supplies necessary to succeed.

Children's sizes and color preferences are available in July, so that you may purchase and donate what is appropriate for each child. A Specific list of items for backpacks and personal care is also provided to sponsors. The goal is for each child to receive two sets of clothing (pants and shirts), sneakers or shoes, coat, socks, underwear, backpack, appropriate school supplies and personal care items. The social service administrators from area towns and agencies provide information on families that need assistance.

Sponsors may sign up to clothe an entire child, sponsor part of the outfit or make a cash contribution towards the clothing of a child. Gift cards to stores are also accepted. clothing drop off will be at the United Way before August 1st, and at Webster Bank, 19 Main Street, (First Floor, door on right hand side) after that date. Please call 860-354-8800 to schedule a drop off time. The program will run until August 8 but donations can be accepted any time. Contact Kathy Thomas at the United Way office at 860-354-8800 or eamil her at kthomas@uwwesternct.org.
