United Way of Western Connecticut announces new Chief Executive Officer

STAMFORDPLUS.COM -- Nov 13 2008 -- United Way of Western Connecticut (UWWC) announced recently that Michael Johnston of Wilton, CT will be joining the organization as its new Chief Executive Officer on December 1st. The current CEO, June Renzulli, will be leaving the United Way after 13 years of service.

Michael Johnston was chosen from over 60 candidates after a nationwide search. “The board of directors wanted a visionary leader. Someone who could strategically position United Way for the greatest impact in our communities well into the next decade. We looked for someone who has strong analytical and financial skills, fund development experience, but also had the passion and experience in the social service field. Michael comes to UWWC with extensive corporate and volunteer experience in our region. We are confident that the organization will thrive under his leadership and the board is delighted to have Michael join us in this important role” states Rey Giallongo, board chair and Senior Vice President of First County Bank.

Michael has worked for 20 years in financial services, and most recently served as chief financial officer for several innovative, early-stage venture-backed companies involved in e-commerce. He also worked for GE Capital for 8 years in New York and Stamford, CT. Prior to GE, Michael worked on Wall Street and in the Department of City Planning for the City of New York as an economic analyst.

Michael has a history of success and activism in both the private sector and within nonprofit organizations. In addition to his professional career, he has been engaged in a variety of volunteer capacities. As Chairman of the capital campaign at Temple B'nai Chaim in Georgetown, CT, Michael led a team of volunteers responsible for a multi-million dollar fundraising effort. He also has volunteer experiences within local soup kitchens, homeless programs, mentoring programs, and is a certified companion for the terminally ill through the Doula to Accompany and Comfort Program.

"United Way of Western Connecticut is a remarkable organization on the cutting edge of community based philanthropy. Whether it is providing health care to those who cannot afford it, shelter for those do not have it, or a better education for those who most need it, the United Way is making a difference in our communities” stated Michael.

This job also represents a convergence of my personal and professional lives. It offers an extraordinary opportunity to combine my passion for helping to solve the challenges of our community and 20 plus years of management experience in world class organizations like General Electric. Given the uncertain economic environment, the work of the UWWC is needed now more than ever, and I cannot imagine a better time to join the organization."

Michael holds an MBA and a Master of Urban Planning from New York University. He holds a BA in Political Science from Drew University. Michael lives in Wilton with his wife Corinne and daughter Andrea.
