Letter to Editor: Danbury grants being put to good use

NEWS-TIMES -- Jul 6 2010 -- I want to share with you a very rewarding experience that I had serving as a member of the City of Danbury Grants Review Process.

The process was coordinated by the United Way of Western Connecticut and included Danbury residents of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and businessmen and women and homemakers.

I recently was a member of the Danbury Common Council for five years and was on the other end of reviewing the grants at the very end of the process when this group of elected officials were called upon to make a decision to fund or deny funding to an agency. During the funding review process, I had an opportunity to meet the various agency directors, board members and individuals who will benefit from the monies funded by the grants.

The entire process was fair, and our questions to the agencies were very detailed and thought-provoking. The taxpayers of Danbury should rest assured that the monies being granted to these city community agencies will be utilized to serving the economically challenged and disabled persons in desperate need of services.
