Join with hundreds of local volunteers for this annual day of volunteerism to complete a variety of service projects throughout Norhtern Fairfield and Southern Litchfield counties. Many of this year’s projects will focus on supporting efforts that help ALICE® households (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) who struggle and live paycheck-to-paycheck. Stamford Day of Action will be October 5, 2017.
Combat 'summer slide' with Camp Wannaread
Camp Wannaread is United Way of Western Connecticut’s summer-reading-camp-in-a-bag for area second-graders to keep up their reading skills over the summer. Research shows a child’s reading level in third grade is an indicator of their future academic success, and Connecticut students experience the widest achievement gap between low-income (and ALICE) children and their more affluent peers.
Books will be collected May 8 through May 21—our goal is to collect 300 books for second graders at Morris Street and South Street Elementary Schools in Danbury and Northville Elementary School in New Milford. Camp Wannaread kits will be assembled during United Way’s Day of Action on June 6.
