United Way Mobilized 200 Volunteers in Annual Stamford Day of Action on Oct. 11

Corporate volunteers completed projects to benefit Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. (October 31, 2018) — United Way of Western Connecticut mobilized 200 corporate volunteers from 14 Stamford-based companies on Thursday, October 11 in volunteer projects for its annual Day of Action to benefit the Stamford community.

Day of Action kicked off at Chelsea Piers, where volunteers participated in a variety of large-scale packing projects that will benefit hard-working, struggling households that United Way calls ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed).

Some of the projects included packing weekend food kits for children from food-insecure households for Filling in the Blanks, creating literary craft kits for KT Murphy elementary school and assembling personal-care items to benefit the clients of New Covenant Center. Volunteers also learned about the struggles facing ALICE families in our community, and the valuable work of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which helps low-income households file their taxes free of charge. A group of volunteers spent the morning learning about the value of nonprofit board service and the roles and responsibilities associated with sitting on a nonprofit board. The session was designed to recruit board members for local nonprofit board service.

In addition, 10 volunteers led STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) workshops with 90 third grade students from the Rogers International School. The project was designed by a Nestlé Waters North America employee, and employees from Legg Mason and Purdue Pharma led the workshops related to water, conservation and ecology.

“Day of Action is a perfect example of United Way’s unique position in the community to bring together companies and volunteers to work toward a common goal,” said Kimberly Morgan, CEO of United Way of Western Connecticut. “All of us at United Way—staff and volunteers—share a deep passion and purpose to finding ways to create better lives for people in the ALICE population. Day of Action is a tangible way to make a difference in the lives of many of our neighbors while increasing awareness about their struggles.”

The following companies sent teams of volunteers to participate in Stamford’s Day of Action: Eli Lily, Genworth, Indeed, First County Bank, Legg Mason, NBCUniversal, Nestlé Waters North America, Northern Trust, Patriot Bank, Preferred Brands, Purdue Pharma, Rain Carbon Inc., Remedy Partners and UPS.
